This drama was set around the 1920s and was broadcast in the early to mid 1990s. I think it was then repeated a few years later.
There's a wealthy couple, and their marriage is not going well. The man is very uptight and officious. They have a daughter aged around 10 who is intelligent, highly independent, and a loner.
The couple hires a young woman to be their maid/nanny, and the man becomes attracted to her. He eventually attacks her.
Meanwhile, the daughter, who is aware that her parents are not getting on, is becoming increasingly sullen and spends lots of her time outside, discovering that she has a talent for climbing. One morning her mother gives her a fried egg, describing it as "a treat". The daughter, unimpressed, slowly lowers her face until the tip of her nose is touching the yolk.
The maid, having had enough of the man's advances, has an argument with him and leaves.
Later, the daughter is missing. She has gone out alone in bad weather and the man, now distraught, goes out looking for her. He finds her climbing the sheer cliff face at the beach and shouts at her to come down. She continues climbing. At one point the man sees something fall, and thinks it is his daughter but, fortunately, it is only her coat. She continues to climb and he continues to stand at the bottom of the cliff, imploring her to come down, as the tide rushes in around his feet. The girl reaches the top, unharmed, and the man drowns.
I was convinced this story was called 'Scotch on the Rocks', but upon researching it, the only programme I have found with that title is something entirely different, broadcast in the 1970s.
