I have strong memories about sections of this film but can not locate title. It came out early 90s I would think, and it must have been aimed at kids (or at least was PG-13) as I saw it and was quite young — maybe 7-8?
Late 19th/early 20th century British period piece set in either India or Africa. There is a wealthy English family who are clearly part of the ruling imperial aristocracy. I recall the girl being put to bed by her nanny and looking at the carved figurine of an elephant or ivory and twirling it in her hand. There is then a huge fire during the midst of the party, destroying the home of the girl and her family. She survives but I believe both the parents died. I think the nanny/governess lived too. I can’t rememebr much beyond that if those scenes with the fire made a huge impact.
