Can't remember the name of the film (it spans decades), but it starts with a mute servant (second wife) whose beautiful daughter is very sought after.
However, due to the war, the daughter falls in love with a Japanese soldier and bears a daughter. This child grows up around food and eventually becomes entangled with another family and ends up adopting the son of her friend who becomes mentally unstable. She also gives up a relationship with a man that she loves as she is infertile.
One of the "uncles" has a great part with Hakka poetry songs and collects pottery from families that no longer like the traditional items as they prefer Western goods.
