This is a period film set in the 17th or 18th century on an island. It begins with 2 criminals who kill someone. One criminal is then killed and the other is caught and kept by the Captain(?) at his estate in his stables(?). The captains wife cares for the criminal and they develop a relationship. I think it may have been french. I probably saw it over 10 years ago. Really want to see it again.
