I'm looking for a 70s or 80s, PBS or A&E series. Set in l920s Japan, a Brit or American woman gets involved with a Japanese nobleman. They have a child, and he can't or won't marry her because of cultural taboos. She is, or becomes, a seamstress catering to Japanese upper class women. I believe the child is finally taken by the family because they need an heir(maybe it's father dies?) She stays on in Japan so she can continue in hope of seeing the child. I think I came in on the series somewhere in the middle, but I seem to remember and ending that was sad and included her watching, in the night, a ceremony of lighted paper boats floating down a river.
