I have just found out the answer. the book was loosely based on a real life event which was the murder of 3 year old Saville Kent by his step-sister, Constance Kent, and she was hanged in the 1880's in Wiltshire, England. The story was an episode in the TV series 'The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher'.
