i can't remember the title of an old b/w movie from 1930s or 40s, set in old England....a girl ends up as a servant an an estate. she knows how to write her name and can recite poetry. this catches the eye of the son of the dowager owner and he is attracted to her.
i remember a lot of scenes of her and other servant girls doing laundry in huge tubs and at christmas they danced. i remember the dowager saying she doesn't understand why people think the peasants should know how to read. can't remember the ending.
i think i was sick with the flu or something and was binge watching cable tv. it was a good movie.
