Looking for a movie, was possibility a short tv series. I remember that it was long story and it had a rich son, studying to be a doctor who fell in love with a maid, and they have this passionate, secret affair. He becomes a doctor and they end up having two children. The maid dies in childbirth with the second child, her husband was delivering it and I remember that he lies down next to her as she dies and is stunned. And then after she dies, he becomes a bad father and is a drunk and the daughter has to raise herself and her sibling and then the series goes on to follow the daughter. Again, it was either a really long movie or a short PBS-type series, but I cannot remember the title! Been thinking about this and looking over the last 15 years, I saw it around 2001.
