The first thing I thought of when you said "rather plain" was "Melanie". However, Burton Cummings (lead singer of The Guess Who) is the sweet man and Don Johnson is her awful, abusive husband. The illiterate Melanie is played by Glynnis O'Connor. It is a great little movie.
