I believe this took place during the Russian revolution. An (notorious) officer went awol but was assumed dead. He went to his home town and discovered that his wife and kids had been taken by other Russians. He set off to find them, not believing that they had been killed. At one point in the movie he stayed for a bit with a father and his daughter, whom he then took care of when the father was killed. He eventually found the camp where his wife and kids were taken.
