Set in the time of World War II, I believe, a young man falls in love with a girl that his father (an older, influential man in the town) has forbidden him to marry because she is not of his class. The two are married anyway, and the father wants nothing more to do with son (and possibly disinherits him). The young man goes away to war and is killed. The father and the young wife are both devastated. At the end, the father softens and accepts his son's wife (who I think is pregnant) as his family, and they walk away together. One detail that I remember is that the townspeople would go to a central spot in town, maybe the train station, to see the names of those who had been killed or were missing written on chalkboards.
