I think you may be looking for a movie called THE LOVER.
Throughout the movie a woman is telling the story about what happened and how she met the older rich Chinese man when she was a school girl and they become lovers. It begins with her meeting him on a ferry that is taking her through a river in an Asian country, she is standing looking over the railing of the ferry or barge and he is in his chauffer driven car watching her. Towards the end of the movie he has to marry a rich Chinese bride (arranged marriage. The main character (English school girl) uses the money that she had gotten from her older Chinese (late 20's early 30's year old) lover to buy tickets for her and her family to take a ship back to England. Her lover is crushed and sits in his (chauffer driven) car and watches as the ships sails away.
